Terminology
Straight Line: Lines extending continuously in the same direction without curved or other deviations.
Curved Lines: A line that deviates from straight lines in a smooth, continuous way.
Vertical Lines: The direction going straight up and down.
Horizontal Lines: Lines that are straight and flat across, parallel to the horizon
Diagonal Lines: Lines having a slanted direction.
Actual Lines: Lines that connect, define, or divide a design through their physical presence.
Implied Lines: A line that suggests by movement or by a gesture rather than being physically drawn or constructed.
Sight Lines: A viewing line that is established by the arrangement of objects within one's field of vision.
Space: The area within or around an area of substance.
Presence in Space: The way the piece occupies and uses the environment around it.
Absence in Space: A deliberate void in a piece.
Opened Space: Space that is not completely enclosed by a line.
Closed Space: Space that is completely enclosed by a line, or unbroken contour.
Kinetic Form: A form that actually moves.
Proximity: The distance between visual or structural elements or between an object and the audience.
Closure: The mind's inclination to connect fragmentary in formation to produce a completed form.
